Ranthambhor National Park

Ranthambhor National Park is situated in south-west Rajasthan, where the Vindhayas and the Aravalli Hills meet, the Ranthambhor National Park is bound by the rivers Chambal in the south and Banas in the north. Characterised by rocky plains, flat hill tops, gentle slopes and precipitous cliffs, covered by dry deciduous forest. Ranthambhor is virtually an island rich in flora and fauna in an ocean of villages, farmland and other grazed arid land.

Attractions
With an area of 400 sq. km encompassing rocky hills crests which descends to open valleys, dotted with water pools and fruit trees, this park gets its name from the thousand year old fortress, which looms above the forest. It is probably one of the finest habitats of the Sambhar Deer. The rugged, varied terrain also suits the Nilgai. This big, ungainly animal is found only in Indian peninsula. Their healthy numbers are due to the fact that since it is regarded as a relative of the domestic cow, it has escaped being a target for hunters and poachers. One of the most endangered species of cats, The Caracal, can be seen here occasionally. Well known for the diurnal activity of its tigers, Ranthambhor is a very special and unusual area where a natural present meets a historical past. In the last few years Ramthambhor has become one of the finest places to view tigers in the wild. The entire forest is peppered with the battlements and spillovers of the Ranthambore Fort – tigers are said to frequent these ruins, too. As a result of stringent efforts in conservation, tigers, the prime assets of the Park, have become more and more active during the day. More than in any other park or sanctuary in India, tigers are easily spotted here in daylight. They can be seen lolling around lazily in the sun, or feverishly hunting down sambar around the lakes. Between November to April, sightings of tigers are nearly every day and the dry deciduous habitat makes visibility very good.

Seasons: October-June, the best period being December-April.
